If you're not familiar with them (lucky you), Kumon is an enrichment centre that teaches school subjects to children as young as three

The brand is found in over 60 countries and regions, according to its website.

Found in a small English town

A Canadian TikTok creator Amanda (@pmandaeats) was exploring a small English town when she stumbled upon a Kumon.

Her video of the enrichment centre in Frome has since garnered 1.7 million views and thousands of likes and comments.

Frome is a town in eastern Somerset, England, and calls itself a "charming historic centre and a wealth of architectural interest alongside a thriving contemporary and performing arts scene".

In her caption, Amanda wrote: "raise your hand up if you were victimized by kumon".

Amanda also commented that she did not think Kumon was a thing in the U.K. or Europe.

Collective "trauma"

Many netizens shared their experience with Kumon in the comments section, and the collective "trauma" they have gone through.

Global reach

Kumon started in Japan in 1954 when Toru Kumon made maths worksheets for his son, Takeshi, which became the foundation of the renowned "Kumon method".

In 1955, the first Math Center was opened in Osaka.

The first overseas Kumon Math Center opened in New York in 1974, bringing the Kumon method outside Japan for the first time.

It arrived in Singapore in 1995, established by an affiliated company.

Kumon Points

Amanda also shared an award that she received from her days in Kumon, a "commitment award" celebrating her five years with the centre.

According to Amanda, she got the game console due to having "way too many points after doing Kumon for so many years".

A loyalty programme in the U.S. and Canada called "Kumon+" allows students to earn points for every complete month they attend, with bonus points for as long as they're enrolled.

These points can be traded for "exciting rewards" and according to a Reddit thread, prizes that can be redeemed are gift cards, iPads, movie gift cards, and even an Xbox.

In Singapore, "the brightest of Kumon" can be awarded the Advanced Student Honour Roll and the Advanced Student medal.
