Next time you're passing through Somerset station, be sure to keep your eyes peeled because the station now has a new funky mural.

If you take a close look at it, you'll spot various iconic landmarks -- past and present -- from around Somerset station. They are:

  1. Mandarin Orchard Hotel (now renamed Hilton Singapore Orchard)
  2. Killiney Road
  3. Sian Teck Tng temple
  4. Cuppage Terrace
  5. Singapore Chinese Girls' School
  6. Emerald Hill
  7. The Heeren
  8. Youth Park

These landmarks possess a lot of history.

Killiney Road is home to Singapore's oldest Hainanese coffeeshop while Emerald Hill used to be a popular housing locale among Peranakan families in the early 1900s.

Mandarin Orchard Hotel (present-day Hilton Singapore Orchard) used to house Singapore’s first revolving rooftop restaurant, called Top of the M.

Created under SMRT's Comic Connect programme, which engages the local art community to install heritage- and comic-themed wall murals across SMRT-operated MRT stations island-wide, this mural's style and colour scheme was insired by Youth Park.

Art Curator & Director Iola Liu said:

"Many of the artists dabble in graffiti and urban arts, and the skatepark is their hangout spot. They believe the mural’s youthful and vibrant colours are aligned to the identity of Somerset."

This mural was created by a team of artists including Anthony Chong, Marianne Tan, Sarah Kaydence, and Rene Foo.

From research to final production, the entire mural took four weeks to complete.

If you would like to take a closer look at this particular mural, it can be found along the walkway near Exit C of Somerset station, which connects to Orchard Gateway.

SMRT has also launched Comic Connect murals at five other MRT stations so far: Toa Payoh, Queenstown, Tampines, Jurong East, and Serangoon.
