Holidaying in India
According to The Straits Times (ST), the couple had arrived in India on Mar. 8 for their holiday.
Family members were supposed to join them from Mar. 13 onwards.
However, the couple's family members received a call at around 3pm on Mar. 12 saying that the couple had been killed in a road accident.
Yuvarajan, a construction manager, and Nagajoethi, a teacher, had purportedly chartered a car and a driver to take them from their accommodation in Chennai to a temple in Tirupati.
They were headed to a temple in Tirupati for darshan, which is the act of viewing a deity for blessings in Hinduism.
At about 11am Singapore time, as they neared Dhamapuri Village in Chittoor district, a speeding oil tanker lorry rammed into the car and dragged it off the road, Indian media The Hindu reported.
The couple and the driver died on collision.
Videos of the scene posted on Twitter showed people trying to free victims from the wreckage.
The car could be seen crushed, and the front of the lorry was damaged.
An earthmover was used to retrieve the crushed bodies, The Hindu reported. The bodies were sent to the area hospital at Nagari for autopsy.
The driver of the lorry initially fled the scene after the incident, resulting in the police launching a manhunt for him, Times of India reported.
It was later reported that the man was arrested.
The incident resulted in a two-hour traffic jam along Putter-Chennai National highway, The Hindu reported.
Bodies repatriated, funeral took place at Hougang
Family members flew over to India on Sunday night, and were assisted by the authorities to have the couple’s bodies repatriated, ST reported.
An obituary on One-Stop Indian Casket's Facebook page stated that the couple’s funeral will take place at Hougang Avenue 8 from Wednesday (Mar. 15) evening.
The bodies will be brought to Mandai Crematorium to be cremated on Thursday (Mar. 16) evening.
