The price of durians imported into Singapore from Johor is expected to go up this upcoming May season as supply is predicted to fall by 50 per cent due to the recent floods.

Durian merchants also predict that the price per kg is set to increase S$5 to S$10 compared with the previous peak season.

According to The Star, Malaysia Fruit Farmers Association vice-president Francis Hong Sun Ho said he is expecting a significant drop in harvest following the Johor floods, which affected many orchards in the state.

The floods and heavy rains in Johor coincided with the flowering season of durian trees, causing the trees to be unable to bear fruit, resulting in a sharp drop in the harvest of many durian orchards.

“This time, the flood happened during the flowering season, which is a critical time, as it determines how many fruits farmers would get,” he told The Star.

“The continuous rain, coupled with the floods, caused flowers to fall before they could grow into fruits."

“Some trees, especially those that were only a few years old, did not survive the floods.”

The peak durian season will be delayed to around early June as a result.

Johor state is one of the largest durian producing areas in Malaysia.

However, if the weather is good in May and June, then the harvest in July and August will be better, Shin Min Daily News separately reported.
