If you ever run out of cash in Malaysia, here's a handy fact: You can use DBS PayLah! to pay via a UnionPay QR code.
Just look out for this logo:
A UnionPay Card is not required and there are no additional fees for the transaction.
Users can pay in two ways:
- By scanning a UnionPay QR Code displayed by the merchant, or
- Generating a UnionPay QR Code on the DBS PayLah! app for the merchant to scan.
Can use in JB malls
In response to queries by Mothership, a UnionPay representative said that UnionPay QR is accepted at petrol stations, supermarkets and departmental stores in popular shopping malls in Johor Bahru (JB).
The malls include Paradigm Mall, KSL Mall and The Mall - Mid Valley Southkey.
As of Mar. 4, the current exchange rate is RM1 to S$0.310272, which is equivalent to S$1 to RM3.22.
The exchange rate is visible before making the payment.
Not just available in Malaysia
PayLah! can be used to pay via the UnionPay QR code at over 40 million merchants in 45 markets.
Popular destinations include:
- Beijing
- Shanghai
- Hong Kong
- Japan
- Macau
- South Korea
- Taiwan
- Thailand
- The Philippines
- Vietnam
- UAE
