2 men, 26 & 31, arrested for suspected involvement in fake AirPods scam on Carousell

The Singapore police have arrested two men, aged 26 and 31, for their suspected involvement in an e-commerce scam selling counterfeit Apple AirPods on Carousell.

The Singapore Police Force said in a news release on Mar. 18 that both men were to be charged in court on Mar. 18 with the offence of cheating under Section 420 of Penal Code 1871.

Detailing how they busted the duo, the police shared that they received several reports lodged by victims who suspected they were cheated into purchasing fake AirPods on Carousell between Mar. 11 and 15.

The fake AirPods were sold in sealed boxes with serial numbers to look "authentic", thus deceiving the victims.

Upon receiving the products, victims discovered that they products were actually fakes.

"Through follow-up investigations, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identities of the two men and arrested them on Mar. 17, 2023," the police added.

The police seized 18 boxes of counterfeit Apple AirPods and three mobiles phones as case exhibits.

The offence of cheating carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine.
