Mandarin Oriental located along Raffles Avenue overlooking Marina Bay has closed to undergo renovations.

The 527-room luxury hotel will reopen in six months' time in September after undergoing a facelift at a cost of over US$100 million (S$135 million).

Seven food and beverage outlets, full-service luxury spa and many other facilities that have served guests for 35 years will temporarily be closed to undergo refurbishments.

Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group said the hotel will undergo a “multi-million-dollar transformation”.

The hotel’s interiors, including the lobby, rooms, and F&B venues, will be redesigned and refitted.

Melt Cafe, a popular buffet spot among Singaporeans, will have a "complete reconceptualisation", the hotel’s general manager, Philipp Knuepfer, said on March 9.

The hotel closed its doors from March 8.

The hotel opened in 1986.

It was last renovated in 2004.

Formerly known as The Oriental, it was renamed Mandarin Oriental in September 2007.

Other popular eateries in the hotel, such as American restaurant Morton’s The Steakhouse, fine-dining Chinese restaurant Cherry Garden, and the award-winning MO Bar, will return with brand new looks.

The hotel’s lobby signature fountain area, which surrounds the lift lobby, will be removed.

A new lobby lounge will be built in its place.

The hotel will also house 45 serviced apartment-style units ranging in size from 80 sq m to 300 sq m, with kitchenettes.

They will come equipped with washers and dryers.

The hotel is set to reopen in time for the Formula One (F1) Singapore Grand Prix.

Some 80 per cent of the rooms have been booked for the F1 week.

The race is scheduled from Sep. 15 to 17.

Interior design firm Design Wilkes, who also worked on the group’s properties in Dubai, Bangkok and Tokyo, will lead the redesign of Mandarin Oriental, Singapore.

Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group is a member of the Jardine Matheson Group.

It operates 36 hotels and nine residences in 24 countries and territories.
