A 72-year-old man died after his school mini bus lost control and crashed into a sidewalk railing in front of Redhill MRT station along Tiong Bahru road on Mar. 27.

Eyewitness claimed bus driver had eyes closed

An eyewitness, surnamed Deng, told Singapore Chinese-language media Lianhe Zaobao that he was almost knocked down by the school mini bus.

He was walking along the sidewalk under the MRT tracks when he noticed the school bus swerving straight into the sidewalk railing.

Deng said he was "just a few steps away" from the mini bus and claimed that he saw that the driver had his eyes closed before crashing into the railing.

The bus ended up damaging the shelter covering the pedestrian walkway.

First day of work

After the crash, Deng found the unconscious driver trapped in the driver's seat and immediately called the police.

According to Zaobao, the mini bus' owner was at the scene after the crash and told them that it was the driver's first day at work, and declined to comment further.

A 71-year-old man who claimed to be the previous driver said the mini bus is a 13-seater and usually ferries international school students.

Investigations ongoing

In response to Mothership queries, the police confirmed that the accident happened at 3:20pm and believed the vehicle self-skidded.

The driver was unconscious when conveyed to the hospital, where he passed away.

SCDF told Mothership they found the driver trapped in the vehicle, and they had to rescue him with hydraulic rescue equipment.

Police investigations are ongoing.
