A 26-year-old man has been arrested by the Singapore Police Force (SPF) for allegedly failing to stop as required by the police, driving without a valid driver's license and insurance, failing to conform to a red light signal, and the use of criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty.

According to a press release by the SPF, police officers patrolling along Solomon Street, at Clarke Quay, approached the man on Mar. 14 at 2.58am.

He was in a stationary car at that time.

Police officers advised him against driving if he had consumed alcohol.

When he was asked to get out from his car, he allegedly refused to comply with the officer’s instructions and sped off. Police officers gave chase but lost sight of him after a distance.

Sparked an islandwide manhunt

Police officers across the island were immediately alerted to look out for the vehicle.

At around 3.20am, the vehicle was spotted by another group of police officers at a carpark along Jurong West Street 81.

When they approached the man and instructed him to pull over, he purportedly refused to comply with the officers’ instructions, reversed and sped off.

While being pursued, the man was seen allegedly beating the red light multiple times.

An intense manhunt was conducted for both the man and the vehicle.

Car found abandoned in Pioneer, suspect arrested in Eunos

At about 3:15pm on the same day, the vehicle was found abandoned along Kian Teck Road, in Pioneer.

The police added that the man was subsequently arrested at Jalan Eunos at 4.30pm, with the help of ground enquiries, images from CCTV and police cameras, and officers from the Central Police Division, Traffic Police and Bedok Police Division.

He was charged in court on Mar. 16.

If convicted of failing to stop as required by a police officer in uniform, the man faces a fine of up to S$1,000 or a jail term of up to three months.

As for driving without a valid driving license, the penalty is either a fine of up to S$10,000, or jail for up to three years, or both.

The offence of driving without a valid insurance carries either a fine of up to S$1,000, or a jail term of up to three months or both.

For failing to conform to red light, the man faces a fine of up to S$1,000 or a jail term of up to three months.

As for using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty, he faces a jail term of up to four years, a fine, or both.
