A Malaysian preacher, PU Syed, took to Facebook on Mar. 3, 2023, to criticise Blackpink for hosting their concert amid serious floods that have hit the country.
He also prayed for the concert in Kuala Lumpur to be struck by a flood, instead of the afflicted areas such as Johor.
His post was created one day before Blackpink performed on Mar. 4 at the National Stadium Bukit Jalil.
At the time of writing, at least four people have been killed in the floods that plague Johor, Sarawak and Pahang, with almost 50,000 currently displaced.
Disappointed the concert was still happening
Syed did not sugarcoat his disdain that the Blackpink concert was not being cancelled.
He wrote:
"Johor, Pahang and Sarawak are struggling because of the floods. But Blackpink's concert will carry on as scheduled. Even as natural disasters occur, human beings continue to have fun and commit sinful actions.
This is beyond my control...
I can only pray to God that the floods will happen at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil instead. Let them have their concert in the middle of the flood!!"
While it did rain heavily on Mar. 2 prior to the concert, the show went on as scheduled on Mar. 4. It even had Malaysian Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh in attendance.
This prompted Syed to post a screenshot of Yeoh's Instagram Story of her at the concert with the caption, "Congrats Malaysia for having a youth and sports minister like her..."
On Mar. 5, after the concert, Syed responded to an Instagram story he was tagged in.
The Instagram user had written, "You mad it's not raining here?"
Syed replied, "Laugh all you want. One day, we will laugh at you instead. So many K-pop fans have DM-ed me. They made fun of me and cursed me..."
Not his first rant against Blackpink
Earlier in Jan. 25, Syed had already posted a video on Instagram calling for Blackpink to cancel their concert.
He commented that as March would be the holy month of Ramadan, the concert will not "bring any good" to Muslims in Malaysia.
"There are many Muslims who are going to watch them. From [the girl group's] lifestyle and the way they dress, we can see that it's bad. And young Muslims will follow in their footsteps."
Syed also brought up Billie Eilish's performance in Malaysia in 2022, where he similarly called for the singer's performance to be cancelled, reported Kosmo.
"Last year, we had a similar situation when American singer Billie Eilish came to Malaysia. People started queuing since five in the morning for her. Her tickets were sold out. Many people went to watch this person who supports LGBT rights.
Now we have Blackpink from Korea. These women are dressed inappropriately. I don't know what else to say. But I know that we have to speak up and oppose them. I hope [Blackpink] won't come to Malaysia.
Enough is enough. And same goes for artists in Malaysia. I'm talking about both foreign artists and local artists who conduct concerts that are wild and inappropriate. They are all sinful towards God when they do this."
Syed concluded, "Muslims should all know what is halal and haram".
Record rainfall since 1991
Massive floods have hit several parts of Malaysia due to the Northeast Monsoon season.
On Mar. 4, Bernama reported that Johor had recorded the highest rainfall in four days since 1991.
As of Mar. 5, Johor has been hit worst by the floods, with at least four people reported dead. The latest victim was a 69-year-old woman in a town in the northern part of Segamat District in Johor, reported Utusan Malaysia.
According to The Star, the number of flood victims in Johor stands at 49,410 as of 8am on Mar. 6.
Out of the 49,410 victims, 14,125 families are currently seeking shelter at 269 temporary relief centres in the 10 districts affected by the flood.
