Hawker centres will soon pilot the use of kiosks to sell local favourites like muah chee and putu piring, Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Amy Khor announced in her Committee of Supply speech on Thursday (March 2).
Local snacks becoming less common
Khor made the announcement as she was speaking on a slew of initiatives to sustain Singapore's hawker culture.
"We have also received feedback that some local snacks are increasingly less commonly found," Khor revealed. "Those selling such snacks usually find it difficult to sustain an entire cooked food stall."
The use of kiosks will incur lower rental and operating costs, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said in a joint release with Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE).
The initiative hopes to "help preserve these snacks as part of our hawker culture," Khor added.
"We will monitor the viability of such kiosks before deciding if we should scale up this pilot."
