If you’re planning on crossing the border to Johor next week, you might want to be prepared.

Traffic flow through Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints has returned to pre-Covid-19 levels during peak hours, according to a statement by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA).

During the March school holidays in 2023, approximately 376,000 travellers crossed the land checkpoints every day, with several instances of extremely heavy departure traffic.

There were several instances of extremely heavy departure traffic on the Bukit Timah Expressway towards Woodlands Checkpoint with tailbacks from the Causeway.

ICA is expecting a similar heavy traffic situation at both land checkpoints in the lead-up to and during the upcoming Qing Ming Festival (Apr. 5) and the Good Friday (Apr. 7) long weekend.

During the Good Friday long weekend in 2019, more than a million travellers crossed the land checkpoints and the average waiting time for those travelling by car was three hours.

Traffic is expected to be heavy between Apr. 3 to Apr. 11.

Check traffic conditions

Those who wish to depart to Malaysia or enter Singapore via the land border crossings by car or bus, are advised to factor in additional time for immigration clearance.

Travellers may consider postponing non-essential travel to avoid getting caught in the congestion.

Motorists are advised to check the traffic situation through the Land Transport Authority (LTA)’s One Motoring website or via the Expressway Monitoring and Advisory System.

They can also get updates through ICA’s Facebook and Twitter accounts, as well as local radio broadcasts.

Observe rules

ICA advised motorists against queue cutting as it can cause severe congestion and compromise the safety of others.

They are also reminded to observe traffic rules, maintain lane discipline, and cooperate with officers on-site.

Travellers should also ensure their passport’s validity and that they have relevant immigration documents.

Those driving Singapore-registered cars are reminded to observe the “three-quarter tank” rule, while those entering Singapore are reminded not to carry prohibited items.
