On Mar. 15, a man, who claimed to be a Grab driver, took to Instagram to complain about an assault by a female passenger which allegedly happened on the same morning.
Along with a picture of his wounds, the driver attached a lengthy account of his unpleasant trip in the post.
Driver claimed woman scratched him
According to the post, the female passenger boarded the drivers's car at 9:30am to travel from Ang Mo Kio to Toa Payoh Central.
Following his GPS, the driver said he drove along this route: Ang Mo Kio Ave 6 > Marymount Road > Toa Payoh Rise > Toa Payoh Ave 2 > Toa Payoh Central.
When they were about to reach, the woman allegedly started shouting in Mandarin.
As the driver only spoke English, he said he could not understand her, but he thought she said something about him taking a longer route.
"I kept talking English, she (kept talking in) Chinese," he said it's like a "chicken and duck story".
He alleged that she "'suddenly" started beating his shoulder until he had no choice but to "jam brake".
As he still couldn't understand what she meant, he continued driving and dropped her off.
"When I opened the door, she started beating me again," he alleged. "I immediately closed the door and drove off."
According to the photo, the man's arm appeared to have traces of blood, allegedly caused by the woman's fingernails.
Driver made police report
The driver's ire lay not just with his violent passenger — he said he was unhappy with how Grab dealt with the matter.
According to him, after he made a report to Grab, he was told on Mar. 8 that Grab had contacted the passenger and would soon get in touch with an explanation.
However, the driver claimed that Grab had yet to get back to him.
The driver also made a police report but complained that the police asked him to file a magistrate court case against the rider to make a claim.
He bitterly concluded that drivers were on their own when it came to such cases.
Singapore Police Force confirmed with Mothership that a report was lodged.
Grab's response
Grab has outlined their code of conduct on their website.
Physical assault is explicitly stated as an act of infringement.
Grab urges everyone to treat each other with respect
In response to queries by Mothership, Grab had this to say:
"We have reached out to the driver-partner to provide assistance and temporarily suspended the passenger’s account after investigation. Grab does not tolerate any kind of inappropriate behaviour. Ensuring that all who use our platform feel safe is very important to us, and we urge everyone to treat each other with respect."
