What video showed

The video showed two SMRT personnel speaking to the elderly man who was seated.

One of the personnel said: "Uncle I cannot let you inside the train, because you very loud. You need to leave the train, uncle."

The elderly man replied: "I go back Chinatown."

But it appeared that there was a language barrier between both parties.

The personnel then tried to explain: "You cannot stay inside the train. Later if other people complain..."

The elderly man then stood up and asked if the SMRT personnel wanted to see some form of identification.

He said: "You want to see IC ah?"

The SMRT staff then said they did not want to do so.

The elderly man then replied at one point: "I [am] Singaporean."

He then continued speaking in what sounded like English, but what he said could not be made out.

When the train was pulling up at Dover station, both SMRT personnel told the elderly man that he had to alight with them.

The elderly man was then escorted out without resistance.

SMRT response

In response to Mothership's queries, Lam Sheau Kai, president of SMRT Trains, said: “Our staff were informed that an elderly man was under the influence of alcohol and speaking very loudly on an eastbound train on the East-West Line."

"For the safety and consideration of other commuters, our staff advised him to alight at the next station. They escorted him out of the train at Dover station."

Lam also highlighted that Under Rapid Transit Systems (RTS) regulations, "no person shall conduct himself on any train or in any part of the railway premises so as to cause a nuisance or annoyance to other passengers".
