Over 100,000 people were on the Cathay Pacific website on Mar. 2 for a giveaway of 12,500 free flight tickets from Singapore to Hong Kong.
The giveaway began at 12pm.
A Mothership reader's queue number was 105,347 with 99,591 people ahead of her when she accessed the site at 12.28pm.
She was given an estimated wait time of more than an hour.
Another Mothership reader who accessed the site at 12.09pm said that his waiting time was also over an hour, with a queue number over 78,000 and more than 76,000 people ahead of him.
A third reader shared that she was given a waiting time of 56 minutes, a queue number of 11,594, and had over 11,000 people ahead of her when she joined the virtual queue at 12.01pm.
She waited 50 minutes before it was her turn.
Unfortunately, she somehow lost her queue number and the website prompted her to start queuing all over again.
All tickets redeemed within 43 minutes
An update on Cathay Pacific's website at 12.43pm said all tickets for its Singapore campaign had been awarded due to "overwhelming response".
Results to be announced on Mar. 20
The giveaway is part of Hong Kong International Airport's World of Winners Ticket Offers, which is distributing 500,000 flight tickets to worldwide travellers starting from March 2023.
Participants who successfully enter the site after queuing will then have to answer a few simple questions correctly, and be in the running to win one economy class round-trip ticket to Hong Kong.
There were three questions, all of which pertained to Cathay Pacific itself.
Winners will be announced on the campaign website on Mar. 20. They will also be notified via the email provided for the registration of their account on the same day.
