Singapore has been experiencing rainy conditions for close to a week since Feb. 28, when temperatures plunged lower than usual that day -- marking the start of the monsoon surge.

Precipitation fell non-stop for more than 24 hours over the last day of February and the first day of March.

With Monday, March 6 upon us, it appears there might be some respite from constantly wet weather conditions.

According to the weatherman, night temperatures on Monday, March 6 at around 1am was between 23.8°C to 25°C -- at least 1°C to 1.5°C warmer than the average over the past several nights, where 22°C weather was the norm.

Since Monday midnight, no precipitation was recorded by around 2am.

4-day weather outlook

However, thundery showers are still expected over the next four days in the afternoons.

Temperatures are expected to be between 23°C to 33°C on most days

Why the rainy weather?

The constant rain has been due to the Northeast Monsoon, when a monsoon surge can happen -- despite February typically being a dry month.

The Northeast Monsoon occurs between December and March, usually before February.

Cold winds from the northern hemisphere winter blow over towards the South China Sea, and it warms and gathers moisture, leading to the formation of dense rain clouds over the equatorial region where Singapore is located.

Singapore experiences an average of two to four monsoon surges in a year, Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) said.
