If you are kept awake some nights thinking whether cat-and-mouse duo from the cartoon classic "Tom and Jerry" are friends not enemies, one TikTok video might provide a clue.

An 11-second clip by TikToker @floracindy1 featured a scene of a rodent-feline showdown taking place at the HDB void deck in Hougang, reminiscent of the cartoon.

While the cat is typically the instigator of fights in "Tom and Jerry", the Feb. 21 clip showed that the rodent can be the troublemaker too.

Rat started it

While the cat and rat appeared to have noticed each other right from the start, the rat decided to throw the first punch.

It leaped out of the corner, lunging itself at the cat as the duo were staring each other down.

This caught the cat by surprise, causing it to jump and dash away from the rat.

After rounding the corner, the cat appeared to let its guard down by slowing down.

Big mistake.

The hell-bent rat made the cat regret by lunging itself at the feline again.

This caused the cat to pick up its pace, putting a distance between itself and the rodent.

The whole clip was made more comical with the Tom and Jerry theme song playing in the background.

According to the location tag on the TikTok post, the comical scene was filmed at Hougang Central.

Friends or foe?

Commenters picked up on the suggestion, recognising that the scene was like Tom and Jerry but with the roles reversed.

One commenter said it should be "Jerry and Tom" instead:

An observant commenter pointed out that the cat's tail was upright, which might suggest that the cat was "happy being chased".

There you have it. Perhaps Tom and Jerry are more like friends than foe after all.
