Back in 2016, the augmented-reality game Pokémon GO took Singapore by storm, with many heading out to hunt for the characters.

This year, The Pokémon Company is back with a new mobile game, albeit a more chill one, named “Pokémon Sleep”.

The company announced in a Feb. 27 press release that Pokémon Sleep is expected to launch globally on Android and IOS, excluding certain regions, in the summer of 2023.

Play by sleeping

According to the company, the game will involve working together with in-game characters Professor Neroli and Snorlax to research Pokémon sleep styles.

What players will need to do is to simply “get a good night’s sleep”.

The game’s mechanics are as stated:

  • Place your smartphone by your pillow to measure and record your sleep
  • The longer you sleep, the higher your score
  • Your sleep will be classified as one of three "sleep styles" — dozing, snoozing, or slumbering
  • In the morning, Pokémon species with similar sleep styles will gather around Snorlax
  • Your score will determine the number of Pokémon species gathered

Every Pokémon has a few different sleep styles, so players can discover one’s own sleep behaviour through the type of Pokémon gathered.

Pokémon GO Plus + accessory

In addition to the mobile game, the company also announced a new Pokémon GO Plus + accessory that can be used with Pokémon Sleep.

This device uses Bluetooth Low Energy technology and is operated by a central button. It can help one in measuring sleep data when it is placed by the pillow.

There’s apparently also a Pikachu voice within the device that can sing lullabies and give prompts when it is time to wake up or go to sleep.

Similarly, the more sleep you get, the “friendlier” this Pikachu will become and players will be able to unlock new alarm sounds.

Pokémon GO Plus + is scheduled to be released on Jul. 14.
