A Malaysian TikToker has found mystery eggs on the banana leaf wrapping for her nasi lemak.
Found them inside the packet
According to hype.my, a Malaysian woman, to her horror, found some mystery eggs on a banana leaf that she had purchased from an eatery near the entrance of the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur.
In what can only be described as the worst case scenario, she found the eggs on the inside of a packet of nasi lemak after she had finished her meal.
Not realising what the little round objects were, she took a picture and sent it to her mother, thinking it was part of her food at first.
Her partner suggested that they were basil seeds, which admittedly there is a resemblance.
But her mother sent back the sobering news: they were frog eggs.
Horrified, she complained to the restaurant staff who, while sympathetic, said they were unable to offer her a refund.
Offering instead to replace her meal, she took an egg sandwich, of course not opting for another packet of nasi lemak.
Saying that she would "never eat nasi lemak wrapped in banana leaves again", she even abandoned the second packet of nasi lemak she had already bought.
But were they frog eggs?
However commentators on a reposted video, as well as the popular Lowyat forum cast, doubted as to whether these were frog eggs.
While frog eggs do have some resemblance to what was shown, a banana tree seems an odd place to find them, as frogs more often leave their frogspawn in water.
Although it is not unheard of them to also lay eggs in trees, it still seems somewhat unlikely.
But there have been numerous alternatives put forward, such as:
Snail eggs
Or butterfly eggs:
It's not really clear what the original eggs looked like or if they had been stained by the sambal in the nasi lemak, so there's no way of saying for sure what the eggs were.
Banana leaf nasi lemak is usually great, but it might be worthwhile to make sure that the stall you're buying it from has thoroughly washed their banana leaves first.
