3 dead, 5 injured in Michigan State University shooting: Suspect, 43, dead from self-inflicted gunshot wound

Three people are confirmed dead after a shooting on the East Lansing campus at Michigan State University (MSU) on Feb. 13 (U.S. time).

According to updates provided by MSU Police on Twitter, the shooting occurred after 8pm (U.S. time).

What happened

MSU police issued an alert more than an hour after the shooting, stating that shots were fired at Berkey Hall on the East Lansing Campus.

The police advised all students and staff on campus to secure-in-place immediately as police were active on the scene.

MSU police also confirmed that there have been five victims who were transferred to Sparrow Hospital and are currently in critical condition, in addition to the three confirmed fatalities.

The suspect was initially on the loose.

He was described as being of black ethnicity, short in stature, and wearing red shoes, a jean jacket, and a baseball cap that is navy with a lighter brim.

MSU police subsequently issued another tweet stating that there was a secondary shooting at IM East, a recreational sports and fitness center on campus.

At 12:30am (U.S. time), MSU police stated that the suspect had died from a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He was located off campus.

Shelter-in-place was then lifted.

The suspect was identified as a 43-year-old male who was not affiliated with MSU.
