An entire glass panel at a food court in NEX shopping mall suddenly shattered, but luckily no one was hurt by the glass fragments.

This took place at the Food Republic outlet located at Level B2 of the mall, on Feb. 27 at 2:22pm, according to a Food Republic spokesperson.

"The glass door shattered suddenly with no apparent reason," the spokesperson said in a statement to Mothership.

The affected glass panel was at the entrance to the food court from the mall's exterior.

What happened?

A lady surnamed Chen (hanyu pinyin) told Lianhe Zaobao that she was having a drink with a friend in the food court when she suddenly heard a loud bang.

In an instant, the glass panel which was two to three tables away from her exploded, and the fragments shattered all over the ground.

Chen said, "There was even a young man sitting at the table next to the glass panel, but thankfully none of the glass fragments landed on him."

According to Chen, the panel had been cordoned off even before the incident, with a notice reminding patrons not to use that particular entrance.

It turned out to be a wise precaution.

No injuries reported; glass door to be replaced

Food Republic explained to Mothership that their team at NEX had noticed the auto-sliding glass door was not functioning well the day before. This was during their closing hours at 11:30pm.

After further assessment made on Feb. 27 before the store opening, the team cordoned off the area with queue poles and signage to redirect customers to the other entrance.

As patrons largely avoided that entrance, no injuries were reported and cleaners were quickly deployed to clean up the shattered glass.

Food Republic is currently working closely with the mall management and the contractor to replace the glass door.

The spokesperson from Food Republic assured, "We take the matter seriously as the safety of our patrons is of utmost importance. Our team will continue to be vigilant in ensuring immediate actions are taken during their routine inspections before and after store opening hours."
