It was a sad day back on Jun. 15, 2021, when the popular roast meat stall, Foong Kee Traditional Charcoal Roaster, announced its closure.
Widely regarded as one of the best places to get Cantonese-style roast meat, the restaurant was famous for its charcoal-roasted duck, siew yoke, and char siew, which is made from a cut of pork taken from the pig's tender armpit area.
Owner needed a break
According to 8days.sg, Derrick Wong, owner and chef, who was 58 then, said: "Foong Kee needs rest for a long period. More than 20 years' work, just need rest."
However, he did not rule out the possibility of making a comeback.
Kept his promise
True to his word, the meat stall has made its return -- back to its old spot at Commonwealth Crescent Market and Food Centre.
Located on the second floor, Wong continues to serve his famous char siew, roast duck, and roast pork over rice at this stall.
A plate of char siew or roast pork rice starts at S$4, and S$5.50 for a combination of both.
A roast pork and duck combo is priced at S$6.
A three-in-one combo of meats is S$8.
The stall is open daily except Mondays, from 11am to 2pm, while stocks last.
