A 70-year-old man was found dead on the morning of Feb. 25 at Golden Mile Complex's multi-storey car park.
According to a tip-off to Chinese media Shin Min Daily News (Shin Min), at least six police cars were seen at the scene.
The body was covered with a white sheet under the stairs of the car park, reported Shin Min.
Around 10 police officers and paramedics were present. They cordoned off the scene for investigation.
Man lived under the stairs, drank alone
A female employee told Shin Min she discovered the unconscious man when she reported to work.
"He was shirtless, lying on his back on a bed made of wooden boards, but his upper body was hanging off the bed, and a pillow was covering his face. I called him twice but he didn't respond, so I immediately notified the security guard to call the police."
According to her, the man had been living under the stairs for the past few months.
Friends of the man rushed to the scene when they heard the news but declined to speak.
One of them told Shin Min:
"I knew him since I was 18 years old. He suffered from a disease. When I looked under the sheet just now, his face was swollen and blue. It looks like he suffocated to death."
A nearby shopkeeper said he was familiar with the deceased, as he would drink at the bar in the building almost every night.
"He is a patron of ours. I typically see him party with a group of friends, but recently he has been drinking alone in the stairwell."
Case of unnatural death
In response to Mothership's enquiries, the police said it was alerted to a case of unnatural death at Golden Mile Complex at around 9am on Feb. 25.
The 70-year-old man was found lying motionless and was pronounced dead at scene by an SCDF paramedic.
Based on preliminary investigations, the police do not suspect foul play.
Police investigations are ongoing.
