Although Guo died almost a year ago, his death only gained traction recently after his mother provided her account of what happened on Weibo, together with a clip of the CCTV footage, on Feb. 6, 2023.

According to his mother, the second instance proceedings are ongoing in court.

What happened

According to Guo's mother, the boy was attending his third class on the morning of Nov. 25, 2020, when he started to feel unwell.

He then raised his hand at 10:21am to report his condition to his teacher, Bao Hanqing, but he was ignored.

Later on, the CCTV footage showed that the boy raised his hands a total of seven times.

Guo's mother said one of his classmates informed her that, by the time he raised his hand for the seventh time, Bao only asked him to hold it in and rest his head on his desk.

For the next 20 minutes, the boy could be seen resting his head on the table.

Besides not attending to Guo's condition, his mother said Bao also failed to notify his parents on time.

If she had, Guo's father would have been able to pick him up immediately as his father was already waiting for him at the school gate.

Instead, Bao allegedly continued with the lesson and even ended it 10 minutes late.

After the lesson, Bao could be seen leaning against the podium, rather than taking care of Guo.

When students started to line up outside the classroom, Guo was filmed walking unsteadily and had to lean against the wall occasionally to support himself.

The boy was also caught crying on camera.

At 10:56am, Bao finally went over to check on Guo after being informed about his condition by another student.

Upon learning about his condition, Bao held the boy by his left arm and walked downstairs with him.

However, according to Guo's classmate, when they reached the fourth floor, Bao scolded Guo and asked him to stop crying after he told her he was too weak to walk.

When Guo tried to reach the handrail for support, he was also pulled away by Bao.

According to Guo's mother, the boy eventually fell down at the corner of the staircase at 10:57am, hitting the back of his head.

However, it was not caught on camera as it happened at a blind spot.

Her husband, who was waiting for Guo outside the school gate, tried to enter the school after his son's classmate told him that Guo had tripped and become unconscious.

However, Guo's father was stopped by the security guards at the entrance and was only able to enter the campus after a mathematics teacher let him in.

Upon seeing his son, Guo's father called the ambulance around 11:02am, Guo's mother wrote.

According to her, there were four other individuals at the scene, including three teachers and one campus manager, but all of them were panicking and didn't know what to do.

After Guo was sent to the hospital, his mother said the doctor informed her that Guo was unconscious and was not breathing after falling down, his brain cells were irreversibly damaged from oxygen deprivation.

She also added that her child was hospitalised for 280 days and nursed at home for another 190 days before passing away in the hospital.

School failed to provide complete footage: mother

According to Guo's mother, she and her husband had asked the school multiple times to send them the footage from the surveillance cameras, but their requests weren't successful.

When they finally received the footage half a month later, they noticed that it wasn't complete.

She also claimed that there was actually a surveillance camera installed at the place where her son tripped, but the school did not share the footage with her, claiming that her son fell in a blind spot instead.

Court proceedings ongoing

In a follow-up Weibo post on Feb. 11, Guo's mother shared that the second instance proceeding for her son's case is currently ongoing as the couple found the results from the first instance proceeding "unacceptable".

An official at the Gulou district education bureau in Fuzhou, which oversees Guo's primary school, told Hongxing News that the first instance proceeding found that the boy had underlying conditions, and his death was not related to his fall on campus.

The official also said that the police had investigated the incident and checked the surveillance cameras.

However, they did not find any evidence that the school had purposely deleted or altered the footage, Hongxing reported the official as saying.

Hongxing had also attempted to reach Guo's school and the local police multiple times, but no responses were given.

Guo was healthy, teacher should bear full responsibility: mother

In response to the court findings, Guo's mother denied that her child had any underlying disease and claimed that he has always been very healthy.

She also said that the CT scan results provided by the hospital showed that the boy was suffering from bleeding within his brain tissue.

She insisted that it is an "irrefutable fact" that it was the teacher's negligence and inadequate response that led to the fall of the boy, the delay in his treatment, and his eventual death.

While Guo's family continue mourning his death, Bao did not receive any punishment and is currently still teaching at the school, according to Guo's mother.

Additionally, the school has not apologised to Guo's parents for the past two years.

In fact, Bao didn't even attend the court proceedings, despite being a key witness.
