Thailand has scrapped its Covid-19 requirements for all international visitors arriving in the country, Reuters reported.

The rescission of Covid rules for incoming travellers comes two days after Thailand announced that they would reinstate them.

The new rules kicked in at 1am (local time) on Jan. 9.

The requirements were abruptly announced due to increasing concern over the surge of cases in China as its borders reopened on Jan. 8, according to The Nation.

No longer require proof of Covid jabs

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnivrakul told reporters on Jan. 9 that a proof of vaccination which was earlier required was no longer needed due to adequate vaccination rates in the world.

He added that those who are unvaccinated would also be allowed to enter the country without any restrictions.

However, foreigners who are travelling to a destination that requires a negative Covid test upon arrival would still need to provide proof of health insurance that covers treatment, Bangkok Post reported.

Complaints from tourism industry

Earlier in the day, Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn had requested the health minister to review the new Covid requirements due to the complaints from Phuket tour operators, The Nation reported.

According to an earlier report by the Bangkok Post, the Phuket Tourist Association had written a letter on Jan. 8 to the government, saying that the new requirements would negatively impact the recovery of tourism.

Many foreign travel operators in Europe had reportedly already canceled several bookings to Thailand after the announcement.
