A 7-Eleven employee in Malaysia was caught on camera using a mop to clean a microwave oven.

The photos were put up on Twitter on Jan. 22.

They sparked a massive outcry.

The tweet has been viewed some 2.2 million times, with more than 14,000 retweets in less than four days.

The employee was working in an outlet in Kampung Attap, Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, New Straits Times reported.

He has since been suspended, 7-Eleven said on Jan. 25 via Twitter in its latest update on the incident.

A Twitter user commented: "Is this a staff with a disabled brain?"

Another Twitter user claimed that the same employee had allegedly mopped the floor once and used the same mop to wipe the seats when he worked at a train station.

MRT Corp has since apologised and said it is looking into whether the incident occurred at a particular station.

7-Eleven issued an official statement on Jan. 23 apologising for the employee's actions.

7-Eleven statement

On Jan. 24, it said via Twitter that actions have been taken in response to the incident.

"We at 7-Eleven Malaysia would like to offer our sincerest apologies for the actions of one of our employees who failed to comply with our strict sanitation protocols," the statement said.

"This is a clear violation and does not reflect the high standards we strive to maintain in all of our stores."

A brand new microwave oven has replaced the one which was being mopped by the employee, 7-Eleven added.

The store had to undergo a thorough cleaning and sanitisation process.

7-Eleven Malaysia also assured the public that stricter measures will be implemented and will ensure that all their employees follow hygiene protocols.
