A 27-year-old woman brought tears to many people's eyes after she was videoed kneeling down in front of her elder brother during her graduation as a form of thanks and deep respect for his sacrifice.

A Dec. 2 TikTok of the act of gratitude has been watched more than 10 million times and picked up by Thai media.

The caption of the video read: “Thank you to this fellow who sacrificed everything for his sister”.

What video showed

The woman first gave her brother her graduation gown.

She then knelt on the ground and bowed her head.

Such a gesture is regarded as a sign of deep respect, contrition or thanks in Thailand.

It is carried out to show deep respect for the other party, and in some cases, to also ask for pardon or forgiveness.

The woman's brother touched the top of his sister's head to acknowledge her show of affection.

Background

The woman graduated from the Rajabhat University in the southern Thai province of Nakhon Sri Thammarat.

She was supposed to graduate in 2018, but her convocation was postponed as a result of the pandemic, Thai media reported, providing context for the scene.

She was enrolled in the faculty of public administration.

It was also revealed that the woman lives with her elder brother and mother, who worked as a low-waged worker.

The woman's brother withdrew from school to allow his sister to carry on with her education -- an act which she did not realise the gravity of until much later in life, when she graduated with tertiary education credentials and he did not.

Her mother had explained to her that her brother quit school to save on costs.
