An 18-year-old Indonesian was killed after a social media challenge went horribly wrong.

Coconuts Jakarta reported that a group of three males in Tangerang, Banten, were attempting the challenge malaikat maut -- which loosely translates to "the Angel of Death challenge".

Indonesian media outlet Kompas, which reported on a similar incident last July, noted that those attempting the challenge are only considered to have succeeded if 1) the person jumps in front of a moving truck and 2) it comes to a stop before hitting the person.

Videos of the challenge are most commonly found on TikTok.

At least two incidents in the past week

On Jun. 3, a group of three boys were attempting the challenge when one of them, an 18-year-old, failed to get out of the way when the truck did not stop.

The video shows that the teen went under the truck after impact. Coconuts Jakarta reported that he died instantly.

The driver of the truck has been detained for questioning.

Here's a translation of the tweet:

"A teenager who recklessly stopped in front of a moving truck at Jl. Otista, Karawaci in the town of Tangerang has died on Friday morning (Jun. 3).

'Just yesterday there was a raid, and they're causing trouble again. More than 10 of them gathered. One died after he was hit by a container,' according to a forwarded Whatsapp message."

On Jun. 2, two boys attempted the same challenge in Bandung, West Java.

A 14-year-old who did not manage to move away in time ended up in hospital after suffering a skull fracture. His teeth are also said to have shattered after the accident.

The truck driver involved in the second accident is said to have gone into hiding, but may now face criminal charges for the hit-and-run as he did not comply with initial police investigations.
