A new Muslim Western stall called Mat Western opened in a coffee shop at Bedok North Street 2 on Oct. 29.

Run by Singaporean Hidir Kasim and French-born Muslim convert Umar Fabrice, both chefs boast impressive resumes.

Besides working at Osteria and Pizzeria Mozza at Marina Bay Sands, Hidir also worked at Italian restaurant Brunetti and Malthouse, a Siglap Western eatery, and now-defunct Japanese fusion restaurant Onaka, 8 Days reported.

Umar, on the other hand, attended culinary school in France and has worked as a chef in both France and Singapore, namely now-closed European restaurant 7Adam.

Menu

Prices range from S$8 for a Chicken Aglio Olio to S$15 for a Chilli Crab Pizza.

Mat Western sells an assortment of burgers, pastas, pizzas, sides, and other classic Western main courses like Fish and Chips (S$9) and Sirloin Steak (S$15).

It also offers some rather interesting fare like Pepper Wagyu Pasta (S$10), Cheesy Wagyu Burger (S$14), and Lamb Masala Pizza (S$15)

Most reviews on its Facebook page praised Mat Western for its affordable yet good quality Western fare.

Originally at Jurong Pier

The stall was initially opened in February in a canteen at the Jurong Pier industrial area.

While business was good at the start, the lockdowns and two-pax restrictions reduced footfall to the stall.

In addition, the stall's distance from residential areas made delivery difficult.

The duo told 8 Days that they're doing much better at their current location at Bedok North.

Due to its overwhelming popularity, the stall ran out of food by 7:30pm on Nov. 26.

New pizzeria in JB

According to 8 Days, the two chefs had planned to open a pizzeria in Johor Bahru in early 2020.

Unfortunately, borders were shut and they decided to start a small stall in Singapore in the meantime while waiting for the borders to reopen.

They will continue to manage both the Mat Western stall in Singapore and the pizzeria in JB, they said.

They also shared plans to open more hawker stalls such as one that specialises in pizza.
