The Workers' Party (WP) has a message for Singaporeans, especially seniors -- get vaccinated.

The WP released a new video on Sunday (Aug. 1), featuring both Leader of the Opposition and current secretary-general Pritam Singh, and former secretary-general Low Thia Khiang.

Singh led the introduction of the video in Mandarin, and Low Thia Khiang then took over, speaking in both Teochew and Mandarin.

Eradicating Covid-19 is unlikely

According to Low, with Covid-19 having spread across the globe, eradicating Covid-19 completely is becoming less feasible.

He said that Singapore has recognised this fact, and is moving towards the idea of living with the virus, rather than trying to stamp it out entirely.

However, in order to make this a reality, Low emphasised the importance of vaccination, and praised the fact that most people have been vaccinated.

For those who haven't, he brought up the fact that unvaccinated people face higher risks when they contract the virus, as they are more likely to get suffer from severe complications.

Vaccinated people, on the other hand, may still get Covid-19, but their symptoms are often less serious, and can be treated like milder ailments, like the flu.

Loved ones may spread the virus, even if you don't leave the house

Low said that many seniors may think that there's no need to get the vaccine if they mainly stay at home, and do not leave the house very often.

However, he warned that staying home does not mean you cut off contact entirely with other people, and that family members, relatives or friends may also inadvertently spread the virus to them.

In particular, if their loved ones are vaccinated, their symptoms are less obvious, so they may spread Covid-19 to the seniors, without even knowing that they were infected in the first place.

Encourage those you know to get vaccinated

In addition, Low said that while many elderly folk may feel they have reached an "advanced age" and don't see the point of getting vaccinated, having to suffer from a severe illness and requiring intensive care would not be an easy thing to experience either.

Low then ended the video by encouraging members of the public, especially seniors, to get vaccinated, highlighting the importance of being vaccinated in order to protect one's health, as well as their family's health.
