"I appeal to people not to play such pranks."

This is what Tampines GRC Member of Parliament Baey Yam Keng said in a Facebook post on Sunday (Aug. 1), as he referred to CCTV footage of several teenagers stealing footwear from a corridor.

The incident took place at a rental block where lower-income families live, Baey said.

CCTV footage

The video footage, which was first uploaded to Instagram page @sgfollowsall, showed a group of five youths walking by a flat. From the footage, a total of three pieces of footwear were taken as they walked past.

According to Shin Min Daily News, the resident discovered that his footwear was missing when he was preparing to go to work in the morning. Upon checking the CCTV footage, he realised that one pair of sandals, as well as one side of a pair of slippers, had been taken.

Low-income family

The Chinese daily reported that the 47-year-old resident of the unit works as a delivery driver and earns around S$1,300 a month.

He appealed to the perpetrators to "stop the pranks" as it can be "a little tough" to spend extra to replace the shoes.

In an Instagram post, Baey also said that it is "not funny" when lower-income families have to spend more money at the expense of others having "a good laugh".

Incidences in the past year

In the past year, the resident claimed that their shoes have "disappeared" in nearly 10 separate incidents, Shin Min reported. His family also added that two of their jackets had gone missing.

The CCTV was installed three months ago.

The resident has also found some of their footwear at the nearby common areas, such as the lift landing and the rubbish chute, leading him to suspect that the perpetrators had discarded them after stealing them.

It is believed that the youths do not live in the same block.

In the comments section of his Instagram post, Baey provided an update on Tuesday (Aug. 3) saying that the police have established the identities of the boys.
