A particularly tall cactus plant at Macpherson has caught the eye of numerous social media users.

A photo of the potted plant shared to a gardening Facebook page has garnered over 1,800 shares in two days, with its unexpected measurements amusing netizens to no end.

Tall cactus

Here's the cactus in question, located at Circuit Road.

It belongs to a homeowner on the first floor, but its height has since surpassed even the second floor of the HDB flat.

The top of the plant now reaches the parapet of the third floor.

Although some netizens expressed their worry about the cactus being a potential hazard to passers-by should it fall, it seems that the owner has taken care to ensure it remains propped up.

A long pole is attached to the pot to support the bottom of the cactus, while it appears that the upper half of the plant has been secured by some rope to the third storey.

Fairy tale-like

With many wondering about its seemingly magical proportions, the lanky cactus has since drawn numerous comparisons to the English fairytale "Jack and the Beanstalk", where the titular character receives some magic beans which sprout into a beanstalk that reaches the heavens.

One netizen also alluded to other similar fairy tales.

Friendly neighbours

Some have pointed out the neighbourliness between the first floor homeowner and those on the upper floors, praising those on the second and third floor for leaving the cactus be.

The cactus plant has even gained enough fame in the neighbourhood such that it was featured in a short video about the sights and sceneries around Macpherson.

Growing for eight years

The owner of the cactus, 57-year-old Di Minyu, told Lianhe Wanbao in 2017 that the cactus had been growing for eight years, ever since it was found discarded in the rubbish bin by its former owner.

When it was first picked up, it was only around knee height.

Di is the third owner of cactus, and was passed the plant after the previous owner did not have enough space to let it grow. She believes that the cactus brings good luck.

However, she revealed to Wanbao back then that she was worried about what to do with the plant as she planned to move out in two years.

Although she would not be able to bear giving it away, she might cut it in half if left with no choice.

As of now though, the cactus remains standing tall and proud at the same spot. It is uncertain if Di is still the owner.
