The United States (U.S.) and Singapore have agreed to launch a US-Singapore Climate Partnership to explore collaborations on sustainability front between the two countries to tackle climate change issues.

More opportunities for green growth sectors

According to the press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this partnership will create opportunities for businesses and workers in green growth sectors.

The key areas of cooperation include quality carbon credit markets, sustainable finance, energy transitions, clean energy infrastructure development, and sustainable transport.

Both sides will also explore establishing consultations on green standards-setting, sustainable finance mobilisation, and financial sector climate and environmental risk management.

Both countries recognise that climate change is a "critical global challenge" and a "top priority".

The partnership will contribute to mainstreaming sustainability into the global economy which will bring greater benefits for both Singapore, the United States and the region.

Harris: It's climate crisis

The partnership was announced during the official visit of U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris.

In a joint press conference on Aug. 23, Harris emphasised the urgency of taking action against "climate crisis".

Besides the climate partnership, PM Lee and Harris welcomed the launch of two new programmes on “Smart Cities Professional Exchanges” and “Smart Cities Green Buildings Programme” in 2022.

The two programmes will facilitate knowledge sharing between Singapore, the U.S. and other ASEAN countries, and this will help cities in the region to look into ways to lower carbon emissions.
