Singapore's sailing duo Kimberly Lim and Cecilia Low finished 10th out of 10 teams in the medal race of the women's 49er FX class at the Enoshima Yacht Harbour on Aug. 3.

The duo are the first Singaporean sailors ever to qualify for a medal race at the Olympics, according to CNA.

Best performance in Olympics by Singapore sailors

CNA reported that Lim and Low's performance was Singapore's best recorded at a sailing event in the Games.

They ended their Olympic campaign with a 10th placed overall finish out of a fleet of 21, with 117 points.

The duo earlier finished ninth overall in the women's 49er FX event on Saturday, July 31, to make the cut for the medal race.

They were the the only Asian team to do so, ahead of Japan and China, who had placed 18th and 19th respectively.

The Olympic gold for the women's 49er FX was eventually won by Brazil, with Germany taking silver and the Netherlands bronze.

Dream come true

Lim told CNA that making it to the medal race had been the duo's goal prior to the Games.

According to the Straits Times, Low and Lim had attained an early qualification for the Olympics by placing 15th at the World Championships in New Zealand in 2019.

Low had subsequently delayed her entry to the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Asia while Lim took time off from her Singapore Management University accountancy degree course to prepare for the Olympics.

The pair have also been training in Portugal since early January. They have not been home since.

Lim told CNA:

“(There’s) that feeling of satisfaction, all the effort we put in, all the years we have been away like ... in Portugal and training there, all the events and basically all the time we’ve spent on it, I think it shows."

She added that they were proud of their campaign, which lasted over five years, and their finish upon their debut.

The other Singaporean sailors in Tokyo were Ryan Lo (men's Laser) and Amanda Ng (windsurfing).

Lo finished 21st out of 35 after 10 races. Ng was 26th out of 27 after 12 races in the women's RS:X class.
