Online shopping delivery personnel were caught red-handed roughly handling Shopee parcels in Jurong West.

Witnessed by resident

The incident occurred on Aug. 11, 2021, at around noon, and was recorded on video by a resident from one of the HDB blocks of flats.

According to the resident at Jurong West Street 42, who sent the recording of the incident to Mothership.sg, several delivery personnel under the void deck were seen without masks on and appeared to unload the goods with little care.

The Jurong West resident wrote: "Explains why there are always damaged items when the sender had taken precautions and used extra packaging, but no effort by the unethical handlers."

What video showed

Within seconds of the video starting, several of the parcels unloaded from the back of the lorry were seen casually tossed to the ground.

The size of the items unloaded ranged from small boxes to those with flat packaging, to bulkier pieces of shopping wrapped in plastic, as well as a cupboard-like piece of furniture.

The delivery personnel could be seen removing the items from the lorry, before tossing or kicking them into a pile on the ground in a lackadaisical manner for about one-and-a-half minutes.

Some of the parcels that were stacked were seen to have fallen over.

Treated parcels with more care subsequently

After the first 90 seconds of the video, the delivery personnel appeared to treat the parcels with more care as a member of the public had showed up to pick up some of the goods.

From that moment on, the tossing of parcels on the ground appeared to cease, with the delivery personnel looking as if they were conscious that there were parcel recipients around.

Shopee response

In response to queries from Mothership.sg, Shopee called the behaviour of the delivery personnel "unacceptable", but also clarified that those seen on video are engaged by J&T Express, which is one of the third party "logistics partners" engaged to fulfil deliveries.

A Shopee spokesperson said: "Shopee is committed to working closely with our logistics partners to deliver an enjoyable, reliable and secure shopping experience. The delivery personnel featured in the video were engaged by our 3PL partner. The behaviour is unacceptable, and it goes against our values and service commitment at Shopee."

"We have stringent guidelines in place for delivery and fulfillment and are committed to providing all our users with a positive shopping experience. We will continue to work with our third party logistics partners to ensure all fulfilment guidelines in place are strictly adhered to by all delivery personnel."

A J&T spokesperson added that it is investigating: "At J&T Express, the health and safety of our customers and the public is of top priority. This behaviour is unacceptable and goes against our strict delivery standards and Covid-19 protocols. We are working to investigate this issue with the contractors involved.
