The 16-year-old River Valley High School student who is accused of the murder of a 13-year-old boy has been remanded for another week.

Remanded one more week

The teen, who cannot be named as he is a minor, appeared in court on Tuesday (Aug. 24) via video link.

He has been remanded for another week at the Police Cantonment Complex.

The court heard that the teen had completed his psychiatric assessment, although no further details were provided.

The police will also be making video call arrangements for the teen's family to speak to him at an appropriate time.

The teen will return to court on Aug. 31.

While the penalty for murder includes death, an accused who is under 18 at the time of offence cannot be sentenced to death.

Instead, he or she can be sentenced to life imprisonment.

Background

The older teen is charged with murdering a the younger boy inside the toilet located at level 4 of Block D in River Valley High School between 11:16am and 11:44am on July 19.

Previously, at the teen's court hearing on Aug. 10, his parents had requested to communicate with him via a video session.

District Judge Brenda Tan rejected the video call request then, explaining that such arrangements could be made at an appropriate time.

But on Aug. 13, a spokesperson from the Attorney-General's Chambers said the police have arranged for a video call between the 16-year-old suspect and his parents.
