Two Chinook helicopters, each carrying the Singapore flag and escorted by a pair of Apache helicopters, will be flying across the heartlands in the morning of National Day (Aug. 9), the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) announced.

The flag flypast will have two routes – an Eastern and Western route – and will happen simultaneously for 45 minutes, from around 9:50am to 10:35am.

Eastern and Western Route

The Eastern route will begin at the South and will fly along Singapore's southeastern and northeastern coastlines.

This includes East Coast, Changi, Pasir Ris, Bedok, Punggol, and Khatib,

On the other hand, the Western route will fly along Singapore's southwestern and northwestern areas.

This includes West Coast, Jurong, Bukit Panjang, Bukit Timah, and Choa Chu Kang.

RSAF F-15SG fighter jet aircrafts will fly in a delta formation over Singapore's heartlands, beginning at the Float @ Marina Bay at around 9:50am.

The route is 30 minutes long.

The aircraft is set to fly past Toa Payoh, Ang Mo Kio, Yio Chu Kang, Yishun, Woodlands, Choa Chu Kang, Bukit Timah, Jurong, Clementi, Queenstown, Tiong Bahru, East Coast, Bedok, Tampines, Pasir Ris, Punggol, Hougang, and Geylang.

The journey will end when the jets land at Paya Lebar Airbase.

A subdued affair

A ceremonial parade will be held at the Marina Bay floating platform to commemorate National Day on Aug. 9.

Compared to past parades, however, the number of participants forming the physical parade has been reduced by 70 per cent, according to Mindef.

Some 600 participants, consisting men and women from the Singapore Armed Forces and Home Team, will partake in the physical parade onsite.

Meanwhile, another 200 participants, consisting nine uniformed youth groups and 12 social and economic organisations, will participate virtually.

Mindef said this is the first time that participants will be joining the parade virtually.

This is in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, and to ensure that the National Day parade is held safely, and in accordance to safe management measures.

Marina Bay area closed to public

In addition, areas surrounding Marina Bay will be closed to the public from midnight till 2:30pm on Aug. 9.
