A young man was recently spotted climbing down into a large water feature at Marina Bay Sands, the Rain Oculus whirlpool, sparking some anger over the irresponsibility of his actions.

A video of the incident was posted to Facebook, and although the exact date on which it took place is uncertain, the man was wearing a mask, indicating that this is likely a recent enough event.

Climbed in

When the video starts, the man is already inside the acrylic bowl of the whirlpool, which was empty of water at the time.

Meanwhile, numerous people can be seen spectating around the water feature.

Someone behind the camera shouts "Bro, jump inside bro!", which was followed by a round of laughter and giggling.

The video ends without showing how the man got out.

According to Shin Min Daily News, the man had allegedly jumped into the whirlpool to retrieve his IC. It is uncertain how his IC ended up inside the acrylic bowl in the first place.

Many in the comments section remarked on how dangerous the man's actions were. Others pointed out that instead of jumping in himself, the man could have located MBS staff to help recover his IC.

Past incident

In response to Mothership's queries, MBS declined to comment on the incident.

The Rain Oculus is around 21m in diameter and 5.2m deep. Rainwater is typically funnelled through the whirlpool and falls two stories to the pool below.

At peak flow rates there are 8000 gallons per minute falling through the atrium and 200 tons of water swirling around in the bowl.

In 2013, a youth, apparently a foreigner, decided to climb into the Rain Oculus and hurt his head in the process.

He was reportedly bleeding profusely, and one of his friends jumped in as well to help him out. However, both ended up getting stuck in the acrylic bowl as the sides were too slippery to climb out.

The two eventually managed to get out with the help of a third friend, and left before MBS's security managed to contact them.
