Malaysia prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob is currently in quarantine after having close contact with a Covid-19 patient, Reuters reported his office as saying on Monday, Aug. 30.
It is unknown how long he would be in quarantine for.
Ismail Sabri recently took office as the country's ninth prime minister, with the Malaysian king announcing his appointment on Aug. 20 after weeks of political ambiguity.
The 61-year-old was sworn in at a time of widespread dissatisfaction from Malaysians towards the government's handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.
His predecessor, Muhyiddin Yassin, had resigned after 17 months in the top job, following a failure to maintain a narrow majority in parliament.
Malaysia recorded 20,579 new cases on Aug. 29, bringing the total number of confirmed cases so far to 1,706,089.
