82-year-old unvaccinated S'porean man is 47th Covid-19 fatality in S'pore

This is the tenth Covid-19 fatality this month.

An 82-year-old male Singaporean has passed away from Covid-19 complications, said the Ministry of Health (MOH) on Friday (August 20).

The man is the 47th person to have passed away from complications due to Covid-19 in Singapore, and is the tenth Covid-19 fatality this month.

The man was not vaccinated

According to MOH, the man had developed symptoms on July 30 and was conveyed to Alexandra Hospital after testing positive for Covid-19 on July 31.

The man had a history of ischaemic heart disease, myocardial infarction, cystic kidney disease and hypertension.

He was not vaccinated against Covid-19.

36 locally transmitted cases

The Ministry of Health (MOH) has confirmed 40 new cases of Covid-19 infection in Singapore as of 12pm on Friday (August 20).

This brings the total number of Covid-19 cases in Singapore to 66, 406.

There are 36 new cases of locally transmitted Covid-19 infection.

19 are linked to previous cases, and have already been placed on quarantine.

Three are linked to previous cases and were detected through surveillance.

14 are currently unlinked.

Among the cases, two seniors above 70 years who are unvaccinated/ partially vaccinated are at risk of serious illness.

In addition, there are four imported cases, who have already been placed on Stay Home Notice (SHN) or isolated upon arrival in Singapore.

Three were detected upon arrival in Singapore, while one developed the illness during SHN or isolation.

77 active clusters

There are two new clusters today, including one at FairPrice (Kallang Bahru) comprising four cases.

The other cluster involves three cases linked to one Case 68647.

Nine clusters have closed.

There are currently 77 active clusters, ranging between three and 1,155 infections.

Overall, the number of new cases in the community has decreased from 380 cases in the week before to 281 cases in the past week.

The number of unlinked cases in the community has also decreased from 99 cases in the week before to 84 cases in the past week.

The seven-day moving average number of all linked community cases and all unlinked community cases are 28.1 and 12.0 respectively.

Condition of hospitalised cases

380 cases are currently warded in hospital.

There are currently 27 cases of serious illness requiring oxygen supplementation, and seven in critical condition in the ICU.

Of those who have fallen very ill, 27 are seniors above 60 years, of whom 23 are completely unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.

According to MOH, there is continuing evidence that almost all fully-vaccinated individuals do not suffer serious disease when infected, unless they had underlying medical conditions that made them more susceptible.

Over the last 28 days, the percentage of unvaccinated who became severely ill or died is 9.2 per cent, while that for the fully vaccinated is 1.7 per cent.

Progress of vaccination programme

As of August 20,  a total of 8,526,565 doses of Covid-19 vaccines have been administered under the national vaccination programme (Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty and Moderna).

This covers 4,459,200 individuals, with 4,200,032 individuals having completed the full vaccination regimen.

In addition, 154,936 doses of other vaccines recognised in the World Health Organization’s Emergency Use Listing (WHO EUL) have been administered as of August 20, covering 84,281 individuals.

In total, 77 per cent of Singapore's population has completed their full regimen/received two doses of Covid-19 vaccines, and 82 per cent has received at least one dose.
