Chee Soon Juan is inviting cardboard collectors and the elderly poor to lunch at his Orange & Teal cafe to commemorate National Day.

Chee put up an open invitation on Facebook on Aug. 13, calling for those in need to come forward.

He said the opening of his cafe has given him the opportunity to pay attention to the "weak and vulnerable" in society.

Celebrate National Day by "lifting up the poorest among us"

Chee added that National Day should be about caring for the vulnerable:

"Rather than indulge in self-glorifying parades and making grandiloquent rally speeches, society should commemorate our independence by lifting up the poorest among us."

Chee said that even though some have offered to donate to this initiative, Orange & Teal will be sponsoring the event.

For those who are still inclined to help, he suggested that they patronise his cafe instead to support the cause.

Other initiatives

Previously, on Jul. 27, Orange & Teal treated cleaning staff at Rochester Mall to S$150 worth of meals, which was donated by a Singaporean woman.

Chee also previously invited cleaners to lunch at his cafe for a meal before its official opening day.

In his post, Chee said that Orange & Teal was a place for "the richest and the poorest among us" to "dine in style and comfort".
