Nian gao (rice cake) waffles? Yep, you heard that right.
Ice cream cafe The Better Scoop (formerly Just Because Creamery) opened a new outlet at Serangoon recently and to celebrate its opening, the cafe is offering nian gao waffles for a limited time.
The Nian Gao Waffle (S$6.80) is made with a thin layer of the traditional rice cake in the middle.
Esther, the owner of The Better Scoop, told Mothership that there's no fixed date for when the nian gao waffle will be offered until:
"Depends on it’s popularity! Happy to have it on our menu permanently if it’s well-received," she said.
She said that the nian gao waffle was first introduced during the 2021 Lunar New Year.
"It was inspired by the fried nian gao with yam and sweet potato that my Grandpa made. He comes by weekly to help out but due to his old age (currently in his late eighties), he does not take to cold stuff very well so usually he just have the waffle plain as snack (no ice cream). So I thought why not we incorporate the nian gao into the waffle so that it’s not as “plain”. Happy to share that he enjoys this combination a lot!"
