Seven construction workers in Bangkok, Thailand had tested positive for both Alpha and Delta variants of Covid-19 at the same time, Bangkok Post reported.

Delta becoming dominant strain in Thailand

The variants were detected after tests were done at a large construction site, chief of the Department of Medical Services, Supakit Sirilak, said during a briefing on Monday (July 12).

The Alpha variant of Covid-19 was first detected in Britain while the Delta variant was detected in India.

However, Supakit pointed out that the double infection does not mean that the patients' symptoms were more serious. The construction workers infected by both variants were reported to be well and were not developing any serious symptoms.

Nonetheless, he noted that more cases of mixed infections "could lead to a hybrid and eventually, a new variant".

Supakit also revealed that in Thailand, the Delta was close to replacing the Alpha variant as the dominant variant.

According to tests conducted from Apr. 1 to the first week of July, the Alpha variant made up of 74.1 per cent of infections in the country .

In Bangkok, however, the Delta variant has already become the dominant strand.

According to Bangkok Post, 57.14 per cent of infections detected in the city were from the Delta strand while the rest made up of Alpha strand.

Thailand is currently experiencing a surge in Covid-19 cases, with 9,317 new cases and 87 new deaths reported on Tuesday (July 13).

To date, there have been 363,029 cases and 2,934 deaths in the country.
