Singaporean swimmer Quah Ting Wen placed eighth in the women's 100m freestyle today (July 28).
Her last place finish means that she will not be progressing to the semi-finals.
Quah finished with 56:36s, while Fanny Teijonsalo of Finland came in first with 54.69s.
29-year-old Quah holds Singapore's national record for the women's 100m freestyle with a timing of 54.62s, which she clocked at the National Championships in June 2019.
She is competing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics through the universality system, which allows a nation to enter its “highest ranked man athlete or highest ranked woman athlete in one individual event, based upon the FINA Points Table”.
This is opposed to entering via the Olympic Qualifying Time (OQT), where an athlete meets the Olympic selection time.
The competitive swimmer previously said the pandemic has impacted her training and was taking a physical and mental toll on her, CNA reported.
Quah was aiming for the 2020 Olympics since the start of 2019, but Covid-19 meant that training became "stretched out" and "inconsistent”.
Quah will next compete in the women's 50m freestyle on Friday, July 30.
