Table tennis: S'pore's Yu Mengyu scores upset against world no. 8, books place in round of 16

Team Singapore table tennis athlete Yu Mengyu defeated Taiwan's Cheng I-Ching 4-0 in a shock victory at the Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday (Jul. 27).

Yu, currently ranked 47th, will progress to the round of 16 after her win against the 8th ranked player in the world.

She defeated Cheng without dropping a set: 11-5, 11-9, 12-10, 11-6.

Yu said match was "far from easy"

According to The Straits Times, Yu said that although she defeated Cheng in straight sets, the match was "far from easy", citing difficult moments during the game.

She attributed her stellar performance to her mindset in overcoming these difficulties during the match.

In top form

Yu has been performing amazingly in the Tokyo Olympics so far, earlier defeating Portugal's Shao Jieni in straight sets during the second round of the women's singles.

Her next match will take place later on Tuesday (Jul. 27) at 6:30pm, where she will go up against world number 449 Liu Juan from the U.S..

Team Singapore congratulated Yu on her victory via Facebook

Singapore's Feng Tianwei, ranked 9th in the world, will also be competing on Tuesday (Jul. 27) evening in the round of 16 at 9:30pm.
