A major pre-dawn fire broke out at 70A Geylang Bahru on July 28.

The premises that caught fire is beside the Jalan Besar Town Council.

Sounds of explosions and glass breaking

A video uploaded onto Facebook showed the blaze smouldering in an ominous fashion, with at least four firefighters on scene.

In other videos sent by a Mothership reader, the sound of explosions and glass breaking could also be heard from the fire, which appeared to engulf the roof of the building.

SCDF responds

According to a Facebook post by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), it was alerted to the fire at about 6:35am.

SCDF added that the fire involved the contents of a dance studio on the second floor of the premises.

The town council office, which is located adjacent on the premises, was generally not affected, SCDF said.

Upon SCDF's arrival, the fire was found to be "well-alight" on the second floor of the two-storey premises.

SCDF said that firefighters had to exercise caution as roof tiles directly above them had started collapsing.

A total of 11 emergency vehicles and about 40 firefighters were deployed.

At the height of the operation, four water jets were deployed.

The fire was eventually extinguished by SCDF in about an hour.

There are no reported casualties at this point.

On July 28, the Jalan Besar Town Council announced via a Facebook post that its office at Block 70 Geylang Bahru would be temporarily closed for the day.
