A cafe/bar in Duxton Hill was ordered to close after SDAs (safe distancing ambassadors) found that its seats were less than 1m apart.
Identical Instagram posts by Parallel Coffee Roasters and Yen Bar, two concepts that occupy the same premises, were published on July 7.
The F&B establishment said that it was served with a notice from the URA (Urban Redevelopment Authority) on July 6 at 10pm, requesting that they close from July 7 - 16.
During this period, the store is only allowed to fulfil takeaway and delivery orders.
"This closure is a blow to us, especially with the return of five pax dining next week," the team wrote.
What happened
According to the cafe, the spot check was carried out on July 2, past 9:30pm.
The company said that they take "full responsibility" for the offence, but also explained how they had inadvertently breached the law.
Despite deploying more staff to ensure safe distancing, they had ultimately failed to do so.
This was caused by a full house and rainy weather, which caused the outdoor diners to moved inwards, in order to avoid getting wet.
"This is not an excuse — it is still our responsibility to ensure safe distancing measures are in place no matter the circumstances. We agree, and we will do better," the cafe added.
Implored customers for help
However, the post also implored for customers' responsibility and understanding when it comes to dining in at F&B establishments, especially where safe distancing measures are concerned.
"We don’t set the rules, but we have to enforce them. Our livelihoods are on the line. If you don’t yet understand how strict the authorities are on these measures, we’ve been made an example of. We hope this convinces you."
In addition, the cafe also alleged that the SDAs and officers from URA have been less than polite to its staff, describing the officers as "rude, condescending and unprofessional."
50% sale
To make up for the loss in revenue, the cafe is currently holding a 50 per cent sale on their website.
It emphasised that this was not an "opportunistic play," but that they simply needed to pay their bills and staff.
"This 10 day closure comes at the back of a tough month, and its impact is harder than you think,"
