After having a mouthful of ice cream, a 46-year-old woman in Singapore allegedly suffered a cerebral haemorrhage, and fell into a coma.

According to Shin Min Daily News (SMDN), Sun Hong, who's a homemaker, is currently in a vegetative state after receiving emergency treatment.

Collapsed after having a bite of ice cream

Her husband, 47-year-old Ji Hong Biao, told SMDN that Sun had a spoonful of ice cream at around 8pm on May 30 as she felt slightly warm after having her dinner and taking a shower.

Shortly after, she felt like her "head was going to blow up", became really pale, and was unable to speak, Ji, who works in the construction industry, said.

She then collapsed on the bed.

Ji added that he immediately called 995, and sent his wife to the hospital together with his co-workers.

While his wife eventually survived, the doctor said she had suffered a cerebral haemorrhage. However, the location where the bleeding occurred, which was around Sun Hong's brain stem, made it difficult for a surgery to be done.

"The doctor said Sun would have to rely on her willpower to recover," Ji said, adding that the doctor had also prepared him for the worst, saying she might become a vegetable.

Will continue to take care of her

Sun's chances of recovery are now almost negligible. She currently requires assisted ventilation, and is hooked up to an IV drip to provide her body with nutrition as she is unable to take food normally.

She is unable to speak as well, and can only blink her eyes to indicate her response. In addition, she often has fevers.

According to Ji, Sun has always been healthy, and has no hereditary diseases.

Ji said he now goes to the hospital every day during his lunch break and after work to massage his wife and chat with her.

"I hope for a miracle," he told SMDN.

"I feel dreadful when I see her in this condition. If she doesn't recover, I'll take care of her for the rest of her life."

S$40,000 in medical fees in just half a month

Ji revealed that in just half a month, the medical bill has racked up to more than S$40,000. To pay it off, he would have to tap into his savings and borrow from his relatives.

However, even though the hospital has agreed to a grace period, he said this could not go on in the long-term.

He said he probably has to wait till his wife gets better before bringing her back to China for treatment, since the insurance she bought there could help cover the medical bills.

"But the medical air transport to China costs around S$50,000 to S$80,000, and I can't afford that," he said.

The couple's 24-year-old son, who had not seen his mother for two years, had quit his job in China and flown to Singapore just four days ago on June 16 to help take care of Sun Hong.
