A Singaporean man, Zainal Abidin Bin Shaiful Bahari, has been sentenced to a jail term of three weeks.
Twitter account
The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) said in a statement that he had posted multiple racially offensive tweets while "posing as a Singaporean Chinese female" from early 2019.
The Twitter account, @sharonliew86, contained tweets with racial slurs, and denigrated minority communities in Singapore, AGC said.
The avatar of the account featured a photo of a Chinese woman.
Sentence imposed "in line with the Prosecution's submissions"
On April 18, 2020, the police received a report of offensive content against Indian migrant workers on the account. Officers from Bedok Police Division established the identity of the man on April 23.
Zainal was charged in court last year on July 2, and convicted of two charges today (June 8).
On June 8, AGC said that the sentence imposed by the court was "in line with the Prosecution’s submissions that an imprisonment sentence should be imposed".
"The Attorney-General’s Chambers takes a serious view of words or conduct which wound the racial feelings of any person or prejudices our racial harmony and community relations," they added.
