American man says Marina Bay Sands in Tennessee, S'poreans unite & respond with epic deluge of memes

Singaporeans getting creative.

A man from Chattanooga, Tennessee in the United States, which is some 16,000km from Singapore, put up a Facebook post on June 14, 2021, which inadvertently united Singaporeans from all walks of life -- but not before sending them into a frenzy.

The post by the American man, whose Facebook name is Aye Shaun, contained one simple caption for the photo: "Downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee 😮😮 It's Beautiful 🤯"

However, the image was clearly a shot of the iconic and unmistakable Marina Bay Sands in Singapore at dusk.

And if this guy was trolling, he was doing a damn fine job.

Because he got all the reactions a troll could ask for.

Singaporeans respond en masse

By June 18, 2021, Shaun's post had close to 10,000 comments, as the caption and the photo became a meme generator and a very fun game to play along to.

Initial comments expressed frustration at a foreigner stealing something that belongs to Singaporeans, with a few debunking Shaun and wanting to POFMA him -- POFMA being a quintessential Singaporean word, so if you don't know it, you are not from around here.

But those who subsequently commented were mostly Singaporeans who just wanted to join in to take the piss.

Basically, commenters piled on by posting images that Singaporeans recognise instantly as uniquely Singapore images, and captioning them with nouns and proper nouns that Americans can easily recognise and understand.

Here are the best responses.

Why name a place in Singapore wrongly in the first place?

If you made it this far, you are probably interested in finding out just why anyone would name a place wrongly.

Interestingly, this wasn't the first time someone on the internet has purposely named a place in Singapore as something else completely just to get a reaction out of others.

In 2016, Americans were randomly naming The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands with any mall name from their city or town mostly just because MBS looked really pretty.

And when you give the wrong answer on the internet, almost everyone else would want to be the first to let you know you're wrong.
